the important thing
I was so totally and utterly schooled by my 4 year old today. Sunday afternoon visiting my parents place, I decided to bring along our new kite to try it out for the first time. It’s amazing what you can get for $6 nowadays from Target: a beautiful diamond shaped goldfish kite, with a 15 foot tail also with little goldfish on it, and easy clip string and super fast set up. Anyway, I digress. When flying a kite, the important thing, according to my daughter, is not that there be wind (there was very little), nor that it even fly (it only was up when we were running), nor that she be doing it properly (which I kept harping at her to do this and do that – bad daddy), but that “I have fun doing it. That’s the imporant thing.”
It’s amazing how the truth really does set you free.
After that, I just let her have fun. And me too.

Very deep! I wonder what your response was =)
I see a future philosopher coming along.
I love it when I am rightly put in my place in such amazing ways, not by talking back or sarcasm, but by simple observation.
It makes me humble for myself and proud of them all at the same time.
All I could actually say was “You’re right.” And then I just stopped trying to micro-manage and just enjoyed being outside, in a sunny field, with a kite and a wonderful 4.5 year old.
