daddy’s first attempt carving pumpkins

You know how, when you get started something, you get really into it, and you can’t stop? Well, that’s what happened this afternoon as I was carving the pumpkins for our porch.

I did the first Jack O’Lantern, and thought, hey, that was easy, I wonder if I could do Tasha from the Backyardigans next? Pretty nifty, huh? I used a power drill for the eyes. (And no, I didn’t carve it freehand, I used a stencil.)

Daddy's first time carving pumpkins

As I was out tonight taking the kids up and down our block, I met a few of our neighbours. I think, if nothing else, participating in a community night like this is valuable because you can meet your neighbours. I took the time to chat a bit, and to introduce myself. It was nice.

making holes

We had our ducts and furnace cleaned today. We’ve never done it in the (cough!) two years we’ve been here, and I don’t know if the previous owners ever did it.

Well.

The amount of dust and junk that came out of those ducts was shocking. It was caked on inside the ducts, that’s how bad it was. I’m amazed I’m still alive, and not suffering from lung disease. Ugh. Here’s hoping this will lead to better health, especially as cold/flu season starts up.

The vacuum attached to the ducts near the furnace, and various holes were drilled to allow the cleaning wand to be inserted, blowing the dust towards the vacuum.

This is (some of) the dust.

I love how you have to make holes in order to get in and clean something properly. There’s something so cavalier about it, so messy, yet so necessary. Sure, you can just use your own vacuum cleaner and try to clean as much as you can, but there’s no way you can really get in there without cutting into the duct.

Jesus accused the Pharisees of having cups that were fastidiously clean on the outside, but no one had ever bothered to clean the inside of the cup. But if you clean the inside, He said, the outside gets clean as well.

Sometimes we resist having the inside of our lives cleaned, because it means some cutting away, some holes made. We’d rather just clean the outside, and live with all that dust on the inside. But if we decide to let go, get a bit messy, but have the inside cleaned, the outside gets cleaned as well.

new toys

I recently purchased a pair of Etymotic Research ER6i earphones from Amazon. I couldn’t resist the almost half price deal, plus the strong CDN, well… it was too much.

I just tried them and have been figuring out which eartips work the best in my ears. I think from all my years of drumming with foam earplugs, these work the best and are the most comfortable. The other ones just feel like someone jammed a big rubber thing in my ear, which, I guess, is exactly what I did. :)

Mine are black, and yes, the foam eartips are that exact colour. I guess I’ll be buying replacement eartips in the near future, as some of us have discussed previously, foam earplugs get kind of, well, you know, gross.

How do they sound? Pretty nice. Even. Once you get used to all the sound outside being blocked, and the feeling of earplugs in your ears, it’s a nice experience. Just don’t expect me to answer when you ask me what time it is on the subway, ok?

“Apple on Saturday released a quick update to its next-generation operating system: the Login & Keychain Update 1.0 for Mac OS X 10.5, which was only released yesterday, is 10MB and brings fixes for upgrades from Mac OS X 10.1, Wifi users, and FileVault, Apple’s optional security for users’ documents.”

Well, that didn’t take long!
