Food Allergic Child
Living with a food allergic child, we’ve had to search for foods that are free of the following allergens:
- wheat
- dairy
- egg
- peanuts
- tree nuts
- green peas
- banana
- green beans
- avocado
- (fish/shellfish - not exposed yet)
Being Asian, we thought it would be easier to adapt as we could eat mostly rice and soy based things, but we’ve run into some difficulties there as well, namely, most Asian sauces have wheat in them! Aaah!
What follows is a list of foods that we’ve found and tried ourselves, and that we and our allergic child enjoy eating. Hope you find it useful!
Disclaimer: as with any allergy situation, there is a certain amount of risk in choosing foods, even those that may seem to be “safe”. Even if the ingredients list is clear, there is always the chance of a “May Contain” warning, or “Processed in a facility with” warning. Where there is such a warning, I will make a note of it.
Bread:
ENERG Gluten Free Enriched Loaf made with Brown Rice
This bread also doesn’t have dairy or egg in it. It comes in these vacuum sealed packages which keep forever, and once opened you can keep it in the fridge, or freeze it. We usually put half away in the freezer and keep half in the fridge. It’s ok freshly opened, but mostly we toast it, and it turns out great. It’s not crumbly, and it holds up well. Put some soy nut butter and jam on there and the Comic loves it.
Spread:
Soy Nut Butter
This is one brand we get, we also get another brand called FreeNut Butter which is also good.
Tofutti “Better than cream cheese” & “Sour Supreme: Better than Sour Cream”
Fleishman’s Salt Free margarine
This one doesn’t contain milk solids.
Earth Balance Natural Buttery Sticks
The best fake butter, particularly good for baking.
Sauces:
San J Organic Tamari
This soy sauce doesn’t contain wheat. And it tastes great.
PAT CHUN Vegetarian Oyster Flavoured Sauce
This Oyster Sauce is the only one that doesn’t contain wheat OR actual oysters. It’s awesome on choi and things like that. The sad thing is that our local supplier seems to have run out of stock and we haven’t seen it since. So we have a few bottles stockpiled but we’re always looking for this sauce. So if you see it anywhere, let us know!
